There was of course the previously mentioned Secret of Evermore, but as I said, I was on a rental basis and never got through the story.Īny minute now we’ll see that stupid cat. Myst would have probably been a good entry for a story driven game in that era, but I didn’t actually play it until the early 2000’s. I remember playing King’s Quest V in the early 90’s, which I suppose had a story however, the game was really frustrating when you encountered any sort of non-intuitive puzzle as looking up the solution was a bit harder in the nascent days of AOL. Most of the console games of those generations either had no story to speak of, or they had a minimal story that existed to justify what you were doing (save the princess!). Growing up on an NES and an old Atari, I didn’t really encounter a lot of stories in games. As FF7 was my first RPG, it was also one of my first major experiences with a game that had a real story.
